SAT ⇄ Chattanooga drive

Our four, the Rivian, two split days each way. This one's just for us — the group plan lives in the Master Plan.

⚡ Rivian R1S Tri-Max 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Matt · Kate · +2 🛣 2 days each way
🧭 Status: locked. Both overnights are booked; routing runs through ABRP + the Rivian's nav. No Dometic this trip — the FL family is handling July 4th grocery shopping at Kimball Walmart near the cabin, so the Markells' drive is just people, luggage, and shooting gear. See the Meals doc for the full shopping plan. For context: both FL families (North Port & Arcadia Wolcotts) are also driving up Friday Jul 3, arriving Saturday afternoon like us.

Outbound

Fri Jul 3 → Sat Jul 4 · Slidell midpoint
Fri · Jul 3 · Day 1
San Antonio Slidell, LA
📍 ~520 mi · I-10 E⏱ ~8 hr + charging🛏 TownePlace Suites
Morning
Load luggage + gear, roll out after an early breakfast. No coolers, no proteins to freeze — just people and bags. Barnsley load (if room allows): 12 & 20 gauge cases (unloaded) · shooting vests · ear & eye pro · shells (12 & 20 ga) · clays gloves. Pack against the Rivian rear wall under other gear; verify TSA/transport rules don't apply (car travel, not air). Ammo and guns available at Barnsley as backup if space is tight.
Route
I-10 East — Houston, Beaumont, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, into Slidell. Dense Supercharger coverage the whole corridor, so charge stops double as meal/leg-stretch breaks.
Overnight
TownePlace Suites Slidell · conf 88760950 · ~$213.11 cash · cancel by Jul 2.
Sat · Jul 4 · Day 2 · arrival
Slidell The Summit, Bryant AL
📍 ~470 mi · I-59 N⏱ ~7.5 hr + charging🏕 arrive ~4 PM CT
Route
I-59 North — Hattiesburg, Meridian, past Birmingham, Gadsden, Fort Payne, then up to the NE Alabama corner. Charger density thins on the upper I-59 stretch — let ABRP set the last good stop before Fort Payne so you arrive with buffer.
No stop needed
The FL family is handling the Kimball Walmart supply run (proteins, Day-1 fresh items, boil ingredients, alcohol) — the Markells can drive straight through without a grocery detour. See the Meals doc for what's covered.
Arrive
The Summit · 395 County Road 159, Bryant AL · conf GY-dhgatHZ5 · check-in Sat Jul 4. ~4 PM CT puts you in for the arrival-night burgers & dogs with the group.

Return

Sat · Jul 11 · Day 1
The Summit Lake Charles, LA
📍 ~650 mi · I-59 S → I-10 W⏱ ~10 hr + charging🛏 Residence Inn
Heads up
This is the long leg — front-loaded on purpose so Sunday's an easy run home. Check out early, get moving. With charging it's a full day; pack road snacks and a leftovers cooler from the cabin clean-out.
Route
I-59 South back down through Alabama/Mississippi, then I-10 West across to Lake Charles. Coverage is good once you're back on I-10.
Overnight
Residence Inn Lake Charles · conf 88893400 · 34,500 Bonvoy points · cancel by Jul 9. Points redemption — leaves the Bonvoy balance ~74,159. Studio/1-BR suite for the four of us.

Lake Charles San Antonio
📍 ~370 mi · I-10 W⏱ ~5.5 hr + charging🏠 home
Route
Straight shot I-10 West — Lake Charles, Beaumont, Houston, home. Short final day by design: unpack, regroup, back to normal before the week.
Arrive
San Antonio (78256) — Sunday afternoon.

Charging & the Rivian

how we usually run it

⚡ Routing & charging

Plan in ABRP, drive to the Rivian's in-vehicle nav — cross-check the two, since a loaded R1S with four people, gear, and AC runs a bit thirstier than the EPA number. Build in a buffer rather than arriving on fumes, especially on the thin upper I-59 stretch.

Tesla Supercharger network via the NACS adapter on the subscription plan keeps per-kWh costs down; charge stops line up naturally with meal and stretch breaks on a 7–8 hr day.
